Biography*.

David Shankland was a "Cambellite" Preacher--a "soul sleeper" because of his belief that the soul slept until the second coming of Christ and a circuit rider. He would leave his family for weeks at a time while he rode in the wilderness gathering groups for a sermon. He played the violin and sang. He knew much literature and had memorized most of the Bible. David had a small mill on Redwood Creek near the Hatton Cabin. 
Birth*David was born on 9 April 1795 at Nicholas Co, KY. 
He was the son of John Shankland and Sarah Harney. 
Marriage*He married Sarah Crawford on 27 September 1817. 
Burial*His body was interred in June 1872 at Lot 24 & 25, Marshfield, Warren, IN. He was interred in Shankland Cemetery located 1 mile East of Highway 63, on Marshfield- West Lebanon Road, Marshfield Warren Co, IN. 
Death*David died on 16 June 1872 at Warren Co, IN, at age 77.

Biography*Sallie married David Shankland (about 13 years before coming west to Indiana). They were married in Preble Co, Ohio probably in the town of Eaton. The Crawford family didn't like David much because he let Sallie tend the crops and support the family while he was off preaching. They felt he was shiftless but were proud to have him in the family nevertheless. James Crawford Married Martha Knight(her father a surgeon to Washington's Army). James came to Virgina from England and worked his way up through Kentucky to Preble Co, Ohio. He and Martha are buried on the Weidenhammer farm (land they formerly owned) but the sight has been plowed under.

Some of the Children of James Crawford & Martha Knight. Elizabeth J (Betsy) Crawford married Moses Lincoln, brother of Abraham Lincoln. She and her husband are burried in a cemetary one mile South and East of West Lebanon. She died in 1866. Abraham Lincoln visited them in West Lebanon.

B.F.Shankland
B.F. Shankland, publisher of the Watseka Republican, was born in Indiana, in 1849, but
was brought to Iroquois county by his parents in 1854. His fatehr Kendall Shankland, a native
of Ohio, took up his abode in Prairie Green township on coming to Illinois and bought and
improved a farm there. He became one of the organizers of the republican party in this county
and was recognized as a leader in molding public thought and action. He served for some time
as a member of the board of supervisors. His wife, Amanda Harris, was a native of Indiana, and
it was in that state that they were married, coming at an early day to Iroquois county with their
family, including B.F. Shankland.

The son supplemented his preliminary education by study in Grand Prairie Seminary, at
Onarga. He then took up the study of law in the University of Michigan, and following the
completion of his course he practiced for some time in Watseka. The law, however, was not to
his taste and he served as deputy county clerk for seven years, after which he entered the field of
journalism as publisher of the Watseka Republican, a weekly paper. It was established in May,
1856, by J.A. Graham and D.T. Lindley, and was called the Iroquois Republican. It is an eight-page paper, which has a large circulation throughout the county and is a well edited journal,
imparting the spirit of modern progress as manifested in the newspaper field.

In 1877 Mr. Shankland was united in marriage to Miss Nancy Miskimen, of Lovejoy
township, who was born in Ohio. They have one son, Kendall, who is assistant editor of the
paper and graduate of Lake Forest (Illinois) College. He is now secretary of the Iroquois Club
and is a Knight Templar Mason, belonging to the blue lodge, chapter and commandery at
Watseka. He also served as secretary to the superintendent of the reformatory at Pontiac, Illinois,
an office in which B.F. Shankland also filled at one time.

In his political views Mr. Shankland is a stalwart republican and publishes his paper in the
interest of that party. This paper is now owned by Mr. Shankland and Walter R. Higgins, who
is one of the oldest printers of the state, having followed the business from early boyhood. Mr.
Shankland is filling the office of secretary of the republican county central committee and his
opinions carry weight in the councils of his party and his influence is widely felt. He belongs
to various branches of the Masonic fraternities, including the Knight Templar commandery, and
his religious faith is indicated by his membership in the Presbyterian church.

GEORGE W. SHANKLAND, a prominent farmer and early settler of Prairie Green
Township, who resides on section 27, well deserves representation in this volume, and with
pleasure we present to our readers this record of his life. A native of Indiana, he was born near
Marshfield, on the 30th of May, 1853, and is the second in a family of five children, numbering
three sons and two daughters. His parents were Kendal and Amanda (Harris) Shankland. His
father was born in Kentucky in 1825, and in 1854 they came to this county and located in Prairie
Green Township, where he spent the remainder of his life. He died on the old homestead at the
age of fifty-seven years. His widow still survives him and is yet living in Indiana.

George W. Shankland, whose name heads this sketch, spent the days of his boyhood and
youth upon his father's farm, his time being quietly passed in the usual manner of farmer lads.
When a young man, he left home and emigrated to Holt County, Neb., where he took up a tree
claim, also a homestead and pre-emption claim. The county was then in its primitive condition,
being very sparsely settled. There were only three houses between his claim and Atkinson, a
distance of twenty miles, and these were made of sod. Mr. Shankland continued to engage in the
operation of his claims in Nebraska until after his father's death, when he sold out his interest in
the West and returned to Iroquois County to take charge of the old homestead, which was left to
him as his share of his father's estate. Since that time, he has carried on general farming and
stock-raising in this community, and has an excellent farm, under a high state of cultivation and
well improved with all moders accessories. Its neat appearance indicates his careful management.
It comprises one hundred and eighty-five acres of arable land and is considered one of the best
improved farms in the township.

October 15, 1877, Mr. Shankland was united in mariage with Miss Susan R. Segear, who
was then a resident of Vermilion County, Ill. Her parents are both living and now reside in
Omaha, Neb. Unto our subject and his wife have been born two children, but the younger died
in infancy. Clark G., the elder, is still under the parental roof and is now a lad of fourteen years.
The parents and their son are members of the Christian Church and they take an active interest
in church work. They are also prominent people in the community, being widely and favorable
known. In his political views, Mr. Shankland is a Republican, having long supported the
principles of that party. He has never been a politician in the sense of office-seeking. He is
numbered among the valued citizens of Prairie Green Township, who manifests a commendable
interest in everything pertaining to the welfare of the community in which he has so long made
his home.
