Andrew Gibbs Shankland (1805-1880) and Judith Ann Stoops (1805-1882) were both born in the
Cassidy Creek community in Nicholas County, Kentucky. They were married on Dec. 29, 1825.
It was not until October 1853 that they decided to migrate to Brown County, Illinois. They came
with their entire family, three of whom were already married. Andrew was a carpenter and did
much carpenter work after he came to the county. He with John Bradney and George Bradney
were the carpenters who built the Robison barn, the largest barn in the county.

They were the parents of nine children who lived to maturity: Nancy Brown Shankland (1827-1908) married James E. Myers in 1844. Emerine Shankland (1828-1877) married James William
Plew in 1852. Samuel Thompson Shankland (1830-1908) married Martha Ann Mattingly in 1858.
Sarah Jane Shankland (1832-1912) married William Bowen in 1852, William Henry Shankland
(1834-1905) married Nancy Katherine Linn in 1860, James Marion Shankland (1837-1901)
married Sarah Ishmael in 1861. His second wife was Lydia Elizabeth Griffin. Elizabeth Mary
Shankland (1839) married Philip Briggs (1836-1906) in 1856. Benjamin Hardy Shankland (1843-1925) married Henrietta M. Briggs (1841-1874) in 1862. Elizabeth (Peak) Dick. (1835-1911)
in 1876 and Elizabeth Atterbury (1872-1951) in 1895. David Worth Shankland (1847-1935)
married Katherine Means (1856-1884) in 1873 and Emma Crabb Stoops (1860-1933) in 1886.

At least three of this family raised their families in Brown County. Sarah Jane who married
William Bowen had three boys and one girl. Amy married Arnie Mullen. Their children were:
Mattie (Trumbold). Orville (Martha McPhail). Oral (Nina Meservey). Roy (Lisa Marshall).
Ralph (Ruth Heathman). Lillian (Alvoid Edmondson). Jenny ( ). None of this family resides
in the county. James D. married Josephine Nokes. Their children were Bertha (died at the age
of 19). Nova Marshall. Burel. and Richard Seldon (Ted). None are residents of the county. E.
Franklin's first wife was Carolyn Wilson. They had one daughter Sylvia (Whitesides). His
second wife was Ella J. Mullen. Their children were William Harvey (Maude Shoopman). Earl
(Mary Bauch Straus). Mertie (Cabbott). Edith (Harwood) and Daisy (White). Everrette married
Anna Bradney. They had five children: Lottie (Bowman). Lola (Alford). Florence (Sparks) and
Ross, who married Mildred McCaskill.

After Mildred's death, he married Erma Lee Garner.

Benjamin H. Shankland's first wife was Henrietta M. Briggs. They had five children. His second
wife was Elizabeth Peak Dick of Menard County. They had two children. Orrie lived to maturity
and his home was in the Chandlerville area. His third wife was Elizabeth Atterbury of Atterbury
Station. They had three children: Blanche (Bradney), Alma (Tucker) and James. Blanche and
James live in Brown County. In early life, Mr. Shankland was a farmer and a lay Methodist
preacher in Cass and Menard Counties. He was instrumental in the erecting of a Methodist
church at Oakford and the "Shankland Chapel" between Oakford and Chandlerville. He served
with So. F. 132 Ind. Vol. Inf. during the Civil War.

David Worth Shankland's early life was spent in Lee Township as a farmer. His first wife was
Katherine Means. They had three children. Two lived to maturity. Earl and Fred. After the
death of his first wife, he married Emma Crabb Stoops. They had one son Clinton Richard who
now lives in Quincy. When a young man, Mr. Shankland became interested in law enforcement.
And when he was first elected sheriff of Brown County in 1886, he had already served nine years
as constable. He was elected to the office of sheriff three times. After becoming sheriff, he
moved to Mt. Sterling where he resided until his death.
