William died. William was born on 29 April 1793. He was the son of
Joseph Shankland and
Margret Harvey. William Shankland married
Catherine (?) before 1830.
1 It is with great pleasure that I start adding this family. I discovered them in my early days and found many references to Shankland's in Philadelphia. I had no idea how they were connected. Fortunately I found a Robert Shankland in New Jersey who was a descendant of this family. He directed me to his son who had the Shankland Family bible and provided me with the data it contained. From there I was able to add the family of Joseph and Charles. Without this important piece of evidence connecting the remaining individuals might be impossible. When I started this genealogy again in 2004 I now had reasonable access to the Philadelphia Shanklands through the Federal Censuses via the internet.
Some of the children of Joseph and Charles appear in the censuses and their listed ages correspond to the bible birth years. The remaining connections are from logical fits of later censuses. For example in 1850 William 57 is listed with his wife Catherine 53 Daughter Lenora 25 and Son Charles 20. From this we get William born 1793 Catherine ( a new person but no last name) born 1797. Lenora was born in 1825 and Charles 1830. In the 1870 census we find a Charles A Shankland age 39 with his wife and children. Charles was born in 1830/1831 and "fits" with the 20 year old mentioned previously. There are no other conflicting Charles of the same age so we ASSUME that this is him.
As time goes on and more research is done it may be possible to find some other reference to confirm these connections but in the meantime it is the only data we have to go on.
William was a Sea Captain as were his his sons and grandsons.
