     According to Steve Shankland, Adrians grandson, he was born without a middle name. Because of constant requests to sign his full name he added the initial "B" to his name. He was called AB Shankland by many people.

Adrian was probably influenced by his half brother Martin in moving to Floyd. Mart had been there investing in farm land. They arrived shortley after their wedding and rented until 1920. In 1920 they bought a farm just north of Floyd which the family has owned ever since. They originally bought 60 acres then shortley after another 120 acres adjacent to the original piece. Later, an additional 80 acres, north of the homesite and along the Cedar river were added. The original home was torn down and replace by Burrell in modern times. Steve sold the home and 11 acres in 1993 and rents the remaining land. Adrian sold the farm to Burrell when he married. He moved to the town of Floyd and pursued a career as a salesman for the Waterloo Concrete Co. and Dultmeier Manf. Co.. Adrian was born on 9 November 1887 at Chandlerville IL. He was the son of James Marion Shankland and Lydia Elizabeth Griffin. He married Mary Caroline Arington on 4 February 1912 at Springfield, IL. He married Gladyce L Clarey on 5 October 1953 at Hampton, Franklin Co IA. Adrian was divorced from Gladyce L Clarey on 17 April 1954 at Charles City Floyd Co IA. Adrian died on 28 May 1960 at Floyd Floyd Co IA at age 72. ** OBITUARY **


A.B. SHANKLAND OF FLOYD DIES AFTER ILLNESS

A.B. Shankland, 72, a resident of the Floyd Area for 48 years, died this morning at the
Cedar Valley Hospital, where he had been a patient since Thursday. He had been in failing health
with a heart ailment for the past two years and became seriously ill Thursday.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday afternoon at Grace Methodist Church, Floyd. The
Rev. E.G. Steinman will officiate.

Survivors include a son, Burrell Shankland of Floyd; and two grandchildren.

Shankland was born Nov. 9, 1887 at Clandlerville, Ill. He married Mary Arrington Feb.
4, 1912 at Springfield, Ill. He was president of the Floyd Lions Club at the time of his death and
a director of the Farmer's Mutual Insurance Co. He farmed in the Floyd area for 27 years and
was a salesman for the Waterloo Concrete Co., and the Dultmeier Manufacturing Co., Manning.
He retired about ten years ago.

Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery, Floyd. The Hauser Funeral Home has charge of the
arrangements..

Mary Caroline Arington (F)

     According to family legend, Carrie and Mary Eliza Brian were childhood friends in San Jose, IL. They married Shankland brothers, Adrian and Howard Andrew.
Carrie and Adrian immediately boarded a train for Floyd after their wedding. Carrie was an only child and when she moved to Floyd, her parents missed her so much that they relocated to Floyd. There is a letter written to Carrie that was in my grandmothers possesion which I assume was given back to her after Carries death by either Adrian, Burrell, or Eunice. The text of this letter is included in Mary Eliza Brians bibliography. Mary was born on 29 December 1887 at Mason Co IL. She married Adrian B.(Only) Shankland on 4 February 1912 at Springfield, IL. Mary died on 20 August 1947 at age 59. ** OBITUARY **


ILLNESS FATAL TO WOMAN

Mrs. A.B. Shankland, 59, died yesterday afternoon at the Cedar Valley hospital from a
long illness after being a patient in the hospital since early in February Mrs. Shankland has lived
in the Floyd community for the past 34 years. She was active in community affairs and a member
of the Floyd Methodist church.

Mrs. Shankland is survived by her husband, one son, Burrell Shankland of Floyd, and her
father J.W. Arington also of Floyd. Two grandchildren also survive.

Funeral services will be held tomorrow afternoon at 2 p.m. at the Floyd Methodist church.
The Rev. Wesley F. Belling will officiate. Interment will be made in Oakwood cemetery, Floyd.

Burrell E. Shankland, 67, R.R. 1, Floyd, died Sunday morning at the Floyd County
Hospital.

Funeral services for Burrell Shankland will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Hauser Funeral
Home. Rev. Brian Sullivan, pastor of the Grace United Methodist Church, Floyd, will officiate.
Burial will be in the Oakwood Cemetery. Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home after
7:30 p.m. Monday.

Surviving is his wife, Eunice; and two sons, Steve Shankland, Charles City and Jim
Shankland, Floyd. There are five grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Burrell Edward Shankland was born Oct. 2, 1914, near Floyd, the son of Adrian and
Carolyn Arington Shankland. He received his education in the Floyd schools and graduated from
the Floyd High School. On Jan. 12, 1937, he and Eunice Quinby were married at Charles City.
He owned and operated the Shankland Insurance Agency for 19 years. He was a member of the
Grace United Methodist Church of Floyd, the Floyd Lions Club, was president of the Farmers
Mutual Telephone Company of Nora Springs, was on the board of directors of the Floyd County
Mutual Insurance Assoc., and was a past member of the Floyd County School Board.. His body was interred on 18 August 1982 at Floyd Floyd Co IA.

Eunice (Mrs. Burrell) Shankland, 76, a resident of RR1, Floyd, died Wednesday evening,
Oct. 27, at the 11th St. Chautauqua Guest Home.

Funeral services for Eunice Shankland will be held Saturday, Oct. 30, at 10:30 a.m. at the
Hauser Funeral Home. The Rev. Delbert Grim, pastor of the Grace United Methodist Church,
Floyd, will officiate. Burial will be in the Oakwood Cemetery at Floyd.

Friends may call at the Hauser Funeral Home from noon to 9 p.m. Friday and from 9 a.m.
until service time Saturday.

Eunice Margaret Quinby Shankland was born Sept. 29, 1917, at Floyd, the daughter of
Roy and Bessie Welch Quinby. She receive her education and graduated from Floyd High School.
On Jan. 12, 1937, she and Burrell E. Shankland were married at Charles City. She was a former
telephone operator at Floyd, drove school bus and was a bookkeeper for the Shankland Insurance
Agency. She loved to play cards. She was a member of the Grace United Methodist Church and
the United Methodist Women.

Living family members include two sons, James of Anaheim, and Steve and wife, Susan,
of Charles City; a brother, Keith Quinby of Floyd; a sister, Belma (Mrs. William) Stonecypher
of Charles City; a daughter-in-law, Phyllis Foxen of Charles City; five grandchildren, Deb
Montagne, Scott, Amy, Allison and Robbie Shankland, and a great-grandchild, Alex Montagne.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband in 1982, and two brothers..

James "Jim" Shankland, 55, a resident of Anaheim, Calif., and former Floyd resident, died
on Feb. 23, 1995, in anaheim of a suspected bacterial infection.

Memorial services for Jim Shankland will be held at 7 p.m. on Thursday, March 2, at the
Grace United Methodist Church in Floyd. The Rev. Blair Rohde-Frank, pastor, will officiate.
Burial will be at a later date.

James Adrian Shankland was born on Jan. 24, 1940, in Floyd County, the son of Burrell
and Eunice Quinby Shankland. He received his education and graduated from Floyd High School.
He was a resident of the Floyd area for 25 years woking as a machinist at the Oliver Corp. and
then for the last 30 years was a California resident. He enjoyed working with horses, motorcycles
and hunting.

Living family members include a daughter and her husband, Deb and John Montagne of
Charles City; a son, Scott Shankland of Charles City; a brother and his wife, Steve and Susan
Shankland of Charles City. There are two grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, two nieces and
a nephew.
