Biography*HEAD OF HIS CLASS

Lt. John Shankland, son of Mr. and Mrs. Howard A. Shankland, ranked as head of his
class in meteorology at the University of Chicago, being cited among the first 12 to graduate. He
has been assigned for further training at Luke Field, Arizona, where Mrs. Shankland and their
16 months old son, John Norman, have gone to be with him.
While at the university Shankland was successively; cadet lieutenant, adjutant to the
captain, cadet captain. He attended the Wisconsin Mining school and graduated from the Missouri
School of Mines in 1941. After working in Alabama as a mining engineer he was employed at
the Macwhyte plant here, from which he enlisted in the army as a meteorology cadet. He was
commander of Company A of the Army Air Force Central Technical Training Command at the
University of Chicago.

By now Lt. Shankland and his family have undoubtedly become fully settled in Glendale,
Arizona, Lt. Shankland's new station. For the past 9 months, Jack attended the Institute of
Meteorology in Chicago, and after having been there only a short time, received a special letter
of commendation from his superior officer for meritorious work and adaptability-a letter,
incidentally, not readily written and especially not without cause. Sunday, Sept. 6th, however,
climaxed everything, as that was the day he received his commission as 2nd Lt. On that day also,
a proud mother, father, sister, and wife watched him command a group of some 200 men as Cadet
Captain during the dress parade ceremonies. Probably what Jack will longest remember is the
special commendation (based on leadership, performance of duty, soldierly bearing, and devotion
to aims and ideals of the United States Army), he and eleven others, out of a group of 400,
received from Major Starbuck.

Prior to service, John worked for Macwhyte, handling control of finished stock, and
previous to that, in Alabama as a mining engineer following his graduation from Missouri School
of Mines in 1941. To quote his classmates'-"He enlisted in the Army as a Meteorology Cadet and
has done an excellent job as commander of Company A." His sister tells us Lt. John has always
wanted to follow a specialized engineering career. If that is his post-war plan, we wish him the
very best of luck.

Dave Shankland Old Time Citizen, Died Last Monday

David W. Shankland, well known Brown county citizen, and for many years sheriff of this
county, passed peacefully away at his home in the city Monday forenoon, after a lingering illness,
his death being attributed principally to the infirmities of advanced age. He was in his 88th year.

Dave Shankland was born in Nicholas county, Kentucky, on December 14, 1847, and came to
Brown county with his parents in the spring of 1853. The family settled in Lee township, near
the village of Buckhorn, and in that section of the county the subject of this sketch grew to
manhood.

Like his parents he was a staunch democrat, and almost from the first time he cast a ballot he was
prominent in the affairs of his township, and prior to his election as sheriff of Brown county the
first time in 1886, he had been constable of his township for a period of nine years, and had,
besides, served his township in various other capacities. When elected to the office of sheriff in
1886 he moved to Mt. Sterling to make his home. At the expiration of his term he was made
deputy sheriff by his successor, D.V. Minium, and in 1894 he was again elected to the office of
sheriff. After the expiration of this second term, twelve years found him pursuing other pursuits,
and then for the third time, 1908 he again became the candidate of his party for sheriff and for
the third time was elected. It is said of him that he was sheriff of Brown county for a longer
period of time than any other man. It is hardly necessary in these few lines to pass flattering
econiumns on Dave Shankland, because he was known personally to almost every man, woman
and child in Brown county. The fact that throughout all the years of his office as sheriff and
deputy he retained the hearty good will and profound respect of all classes of people is only proof
of his ability and fairness. Dave Shankland was a good citizen-a thrifty, enterprising man,
beloved and respected by our people in general.

He was twice married. His first wife, who was Miss Katie Means, of the well known Brown
county family of that name, died in 1884. Subsequent to her death he married Emma Stoops.
Surviving are three sons, Fred and Earl of Brown county by the first marriage, and Clinton, of
Quincy by the second. The second Mrs. Shankland died two years ago.

The deceased was a charter member of the Mt. Sterling camp of Modern Woodmen, and had been
a member of the Masonic fraternity for a long term of years, and was always an active lodge man.
He was also a member of the Methodist church of this city, and from that church his funeral will
occur tomorrow, Thursday, afternoon at 2:30 o'clock, conducted by the pastor, Rev. C.W.
Hamand, and burial will be made in the city cemetery..

It makes us feel so sad to think and know that our esteemed friend, Miss Katie Shankland, (ree,
Means) wife of Mr. David Shankland, is, to us no more. Although it has been eleven years, we
remember as distinctly as if it were but yesterday, the spring she was married and became our
neighbor. She was such a pleasant and cheerful little woman that we soon learned to love and
esteem her-not as a friend to-day and an enemy to-morrow, but as a constant friend. Her self-sacrifice and kindness was not manifested to the few only but the many, including old Mr. and
Mrs. Shankland, through their declining years, sickness and death. We think it can be as truly
said of her as any one-"None knew her but to love her." Although her good deeds live in the
minds and hearts of her friends and neighbors, Katie is gone; but we believe she is saved, for we
believe she lived a consistent Christian life-belonged to the United Brethren church for some
years, was ever ready and willing to lend a helping hand in Sabbath school work, by her works
and presence as long as her health would admit. After this we learn, she kept up a constant home
reading and studying of the book of all books-the Bible. Her affliction being consumption,
despairing of ever being benefitted by using medicine, and traveling being recommended by
physicians, she went home with her sister. Huldah, to Bates county, Mo. where she died on the
4th of August, and where her remains rest. Out of a family of five sisters, she was the youngest
save one, and the first taken, being near twenty-eight years of age, and had been married eleven
years and three months. Besides a large concourse of friends and relatives, she leaves an almost
disconsolate husband and two promising little boys, Freddie, near nine, and Earl, near three years
of age to mourn their loss. It makes us think in language of the poet:-
"How drift our happy years away!
How wan and pale our dear ones grow
And slowly fade ere we could know,
That any languor on them lay!"

Fred C. Shankland, one of Brown County's most respected citizens, departed this life at 12:30
a.m. of November 11, 1965, at the Whited Nursing Home where he had been a patient for several
weeks. Mrs. Ann Sharp, in charge of the Home, was a lifelong friend.

Mr. Shankland was born January 19, 1876, and had he lived until January of 1966 would have
reached the age of 90 years.

His parents were David Worth Shankland, who died March 19, 1935, having come to Illinois in
1853 from Nicholas County, Kentucky and settled in Lee Township, and Kate (Means) Shankland,
who died in 1884, leaving two young sons, Fred and Earl, and a baby boy, John, who died
September 11, 1884. Mrs. Shankland's father, George Means, was one of nine children of
George and Elizabeth Elton Means. Grandfather Means was born in Pennsylvania and served as
a soldier in the War of the Revolution, afterwards moving to Kentucky, where he died in 1833.

David Shankland was married again on November 7, 1886, to Mrs. Emaline (Crabb) Stoops, and
to this union, another son, Richard, was born. Richard's mother passed on January 13, 1933.

Fred C. Shankland at the age of 21 years journeyed to Chicago where he secured employment.
He was married to Della Cannon on August 18, 1903, in the home of a cousin, Mrs. J.H. Bowers. He and his wife made their home in Chicago until about 1910 when they returned to Mt.
Sterling and the next year moved to the farm where they spent most of their married life. In 1939
they purchased a home in Fargo where they were living at the time of the death of Della
Shankland on August 30, 1948. Her death was a blow from which Fred never recovered. A year
or two after the death of his wife Mr. Shankland moved to the Six Hotel in Mt. Sterling where
he remained until shortly before his death.

Fred always had a deep feeling of affection for his relatives and his many friends. He spoke often
of his father who was elected three times to the office of Sheriff of this county and served another
term as Deputy. He never forgot his mother, and many times told how happy he was when his
father brought another mother to the home for him and Earl, and that he tried very hard to be a
good son to her.

Fred and Della were members of the Presbyterian Church at Fargo, and were always ready and
willing to help any one in need, and to aid in the betterment of this community.

Surviving are: Earl Shankland of Mt. Sterling and Richard Shankland, of Quincy, his brothers:
Richard Shankland Jr. of Quincy, and Jack Shankland of Joliet, his nephews, they being the sons
of Richard Shankland Sr.: also Jack's ten children and Richard (third) and Mike, sons of Richard,
Jr; also Richard (fourth), baby son of Richard (third); Mrs. Mae Hart of Cunningham, Kansas,
sister of Fred's deceased wife; and C.E. (Buzz) Sears, a cousin, who was a great favorite of
Fred's of Hot Springs, Arkansas.

"Shank," as he was called by friends, with whom he was always jovial and ready to exchange
pleasantries, will be sadly missed by his relatives and host of friends.

"After the darkness, the daylight comes through-
After the shower, the rainbow's in view-
After life's heartaches, there comes from above
The peace and comfort of God's healing love."

Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon, Nov. 13, at 1:30 at the Hufnagel Funeral Home,
with Rev. Herschel Reed, pastor of the First Christian church officiating. Mrs. Clarke Mitchell
was organist.

Casketbearers were Maurice Armstrong, Norris Adams, Philip Quinn, Bert Chamberlain, Michael
Shankland and Richard Shankland, III.

Burial was made in the Mt. Sterling City cemetery.
