Biography* | According to Steve Shankland, Adrians grandson, he was born without a middle name. Because of constant requests to sign his full name he added the initial "B" to his name. He was called AB Shankland by many people. Adrian was probably influenced by his half brother Martin in moving to Floyd. Mart had been there investing in farm land. They arrived shortley after their wedding and rented until 1920. In 1920 they bought a farm just north of Floyd which the family has owned ever since. They originally bought 60 acres then shortley after another 120 acres adjacent to the original piece. Later, an additional 80 acres, north of the homesite and along the Cedar river were added. The original home was torn down and replace by Burrell in modern times. Steve sold the home and 11 acres in 1993 and rents the remaining land. Adrian sold the farm to Burrell when he married. He moved to the town of Floyd and pursued a career as a salesman for the Waterloo Concrete Co. and Dultmeier Manf. Co.. |

Biography* | According to family legend, Carrie and Mary Eliza Brian were childhood friends in San Jose, IL. They married Shankland brothers, Adrian and Howard Andrew. Carrie and Adrian immediately boarded a train for Floyd after their wedding. Carrie was an only child and when she moved to Floyd, her parents missed her so much that they relocated to Floyd. There is a letter written to Carrie that was in my grandmothers possesion which I assume was given back to her after Carries death by either Adrian, Burrell, or Eunice. The text of this letter is included in Mary Eliza Brians bibliography. |

Biography* | AGED MAN HURT IN AUTO CRASH; DRIVER FLEES H.M. Stewart, Aged 76, Kenosha, Wis., Victim of Cross Roads Motor Accident. PNEUMONIA IS FEARED Henry M. Stewart, aged 76 years, of Kenosha, Wis., lies in St. Francis hospital suffering from two broken ribs, a dislocated collar bone and scalp wounds received late yesterday afternoon near Stanford. Dr. C.U. Collins who is attending the injured man said that tho he was resting easily after the accident that there was grave danger of pneumonia in case of the fractured ribs had penetrated the lung tissue. Whether this condition exists cannot be determined at this time. The accidetn occurred about a half mile from Stanford. Stewart accompanied by his son-in-law, Howard A. Shanklang of San Jose, was returning from a visit to Bloomington in the Ford touring car belonging to William H. Gier of San Jose. They were going along at a fair rate of speed and were about half a mile beyond Sanford when suddenly a large touring car traveling a a high rate of speed appeared at a cross road. Neither car had time to avoid the other and the big car hit the Ford a glancing blow, overturning it. Stewart was pinned under the side of the car which rested on his chest. Shanklang was thrown nearly clear of the overturned auto and Gier managed to escape with a few minor scratches. The large car never stopped and at present no trace has been found of it or its occupants. It is supposed to be either a Buick six of a Hudson Supersix. Shanklang and Gier after freeing themselves from the overturned machine managed to lift it from Stewart's chest. They then carried him to a nearby form house, from which the party were taken to Stanford. An auto was then secured and the trip was made overland to San Jose, where the Peoria train had been held for forty-five minutes to bring Stewart to this city for treatment. The trip from the Union station to the hospital was made in a hurry by the ambulance and was met at the hospital by Drs. Collins and Haskins. An examination by the doctors showed the injuries of the aged man to be two broken ribs, a broken collar bone, and a long gash over the right eye. Dr. Milligan of San Jose accompanied Stewart and Shanklang to this city. Both Shanklang and Gier were injured, tho neither seriously. Shanklang sustained a severe cut on his leg and his body bore a number of bruises and cuts. Gier's injuries were attended to in San Jose, and he was not brought to this city. After Stewart's wounds had been attended to. Shanklang and Dr. Milligan returned to Pekin on the Terminal and took an auto from there to San Jose, reaching home shortly after midnight. |

Was here to see me love to all and a kiss for margaret. right soon. Mary Eliza brian The following letter was addressed to Carrie, which we think is Mary Caroline Arington who ended up marring Howards brother Adrian, Feb 1913. San Jose, Ill., Sept. 1910. Dear Carrie,-We are in great trouble Carrie I'm afraid you will have to come to Havana if you see me when you come home. I suppose Tot and Lillian gave you particulars but the boys went to Havana today and Rosco was talking to Bev Rapp himself. If the boys don't compromise we girls have got to go. The sheriff came yesterday and only had papers for three Kenneth, Mick and Charlie Campbell. Howard, Jess Cunningham & Harress were not arrested. Ain't it awful? Just imagine Carrie I am upright member of the M.E. church of SanJose, Ill. and expectant teacher of the Mason County schools arrested for stealing water melons from Benjamin Rapps corn field. Fred said if anybody but H.S. had been with me he would have payed my fine but as it is I've got to lay it out. Oh lord, nobody knows it, but I'm scared green. No joking I'm afraid we will be taken, old Bev won't have any mercy. Mr. Harry and every body knows it. What will Joe say? I wrote to him yesterday morning and got an answer this our new principal to fine. Makes the kids walk chalk. I had a date with a fellow in Mason City Sunday and it rained. He was coming up in his dads auto and so didn't get here. Went to Red mens picnic last week down south of M.C. last Tuesday. Never had such a rotten time in my life. Was going to stay to the dance maybe & I with Houseworth & Gunther but Maymes aunt said not to and we didn't. They were mad as blazes but have got a date with him down at the fair & unless I'm in jail I'm going to keep it. Ray and Mae are here. Henry is as onry as ever. took the taxs off of all four of Freds buggy wheels yesterday. Lillian and Mary are terribly on the outs. She is afraid Mary wants Mick. He took her to steal watermelons two nights. We went to Rapps one night the night before you left. Didn't get to tell you that morning. No it wasn't either it was the night of the K.P. picnic. We, had the rottenest time at the picnic nothing doing at all. but Mayme Tot & I all went down to Marys for supper. Then up to Hals and danced till 9 oclock then Kenneth Tot, Mayme & Oscar, mick & Mary, Lillian & Paul all went up to Raps right up to the house back of the church and got watermelons. Then we ate them and tore around every peace will tell you details when you get home. Maye & I stayed all night at Tots and got in at 12:15. I certainly would like to see Cad. From this letter I think I'll be wearing clothes like that before long. Oscar and Mary came down Sat afternoon and wanted to know if I was making my stripes Mary says she'll not wear them if they're not becoming. Club meets at our house next Sat. I wish you were going to be here. I want to have golden rod for decoration, orange colored ice cream, white cake with golden frosting and orangeade. Then I wanted a few salted almonds. Maybe I'll get it all and maybe I won't. Mama is in a bad humor as you can well imagine. I've been with Howard twice. You'll have to make this out the best you can. It takes every minute of my time for study. I haven't been up town at all since Saturday. Tell every body hello for me. Will write again but thought I'd hustle this in todays mail.
